Charybdis

Since today is More Cats Day on the Internet. I thought I would post about when Charybdis' (and Scylla) first came to live with us. We had lost Whiskers' (March 2007) to the petfood recall and our household seemed very empty with only one cat, Socks missed his brother very much. I was actually looking for a black tuxedo cat, but a lady who did rescue asked me if I could foster 2 kittens who had lost their mother, she said the kittens would be put to sleep if a foster home wasn't found for them. After talking to my husband he agreed that we cold foster the kittens. Another lady took the other two kittens from the litter that survived.

I went picked up the bottles, kitty formula and various other things we would need and then went to get the kittens the next morning. Scylla & Charybdis snuggled together in the carrier on the way home and for most of Charybdis' life you always saw them together. Charybids' got very excited about feeding time and always waved her paws about while she was being feed. She was also a very aggressive feeder and usually pulled the nipple right out of the bottle. Hubby usually wound up feeding her if he was home and they shared a very deep bond. She was his heart cat.

We are foster failures, no sooner had Hubby got home from work then he volunteered that IF I would let him name them we could keep them. Of course I put my foot down at his first suggestion War & Pestilence, but he eventually came up with names we all liked.

They had fleas and were too young for any sort of flea treatment, so every day until they were old enough for flea treatments they got a bath in Dawn Dish Washing Liquid. Charybdis loved to be dried off. She was always very cold natured and shivered after her bath until I could get her dried off. About a week after we had taken her in we discovered she had an abscess on her jaw, a trip to the emergency vet and a round of antibiotics and she became a very playful energetic kitten.

Socks loved Scylla & Charybdis the minute he saw them (pleasant surprise for me) but Charybdis was afraid of him at first. Socks was very sweet and gentle and eventually convinced Charybdis he didn't mean her any harm. They became very close. Scylla adored her big brother the minute she laid eyes on him and thought she could do everything he could do.

Trying to teach Charybdis to use the litterbox was very challenging as she tried to eat the cat litter. We finally got it through her head that cat litter wasn't for eating.

Charybdis loved her family very much and was always talking to us. She was my gossip girl. She loved to sit in the bathroom and watch me put on my makeup. She was allergic to my perfume and sneezed when I put it on, so I stopped wearing it. I hadn't officially started cat blogging yet (starting March 2007, I started posting about the petfood recall on my blog) but "The Girls" inspired me to start. You can read my first post about Scylla & Charybdis here. They both had a lot to say and thus the blog was renamed Alasandra, & The Cats. Once Fenris came along the blog was renamed Alasandra, The Cats & A Dog. Charybdis was very athletic and made some pawsome leaps. She leaped up as high as the barn roof once and caught a bird.

Yesterday was the first day that it was warm enough this year for me to work in the Whiskers Memorial Butterfly Garden. The whole time I was weeding I kept expecting to hear you come meowing out of the woods to tell me what you had been up to. You always had so much to say. I just wish I could have understood every meow you uttered. It was lonely weeding without a kitty in my lap, and so sad not to see you sitting in the Butterfly Chair while you supervised the weeding or hiding under the plants. ~Alasandra

It seems fitting you were buried near Whiskers, the brother you never knew, at the beautiful and serene Butterfly Memorial Garden where your family can visit while remembering you as youthful, adorable, playful, energetic -- and too young to leave your family and friends behind. We know your sister Scylla, brother Fenris and your mom love and miss you very much!

Rusty remembers you well from the cruise with Charlie dog and Momo kitty. All of you had a picnic at the Butterfly Garden before leaving on the cruise..

Charybdis was my baby and her Daddy's girl. She crammed a lot of living into her all too brief life, and we will love her always.

Charybdis' story:
Whiskers died March 2007 due to the petfood recall (you can read his story at The Last Meow) and we were all very lonely without him. I had talked to a lady who was working to rescue feral/abandoned cats. Many of which were homeless due to Katrina. They had been trying to trap Scylla & Charybdis' Mother before she gave birth but due to lack of foster homes were unable to do so. They were now waiting for her to bring the kittens to eat as they couldn't find them. Then they found the Mother Cat dead ................... a search turned up four surviving kittens. I took two and another lady fostered the other two.

Scylla was very protective of Charybdis and stood guard over he while she slept. Shortly after we brought the kittens home we discovered that Charybdis had an abscess on her neck that was infected, after she recovered from that the kitten that slept all the time morphed into the kitten that wanted to PLAY, PLAY, PLAY constantly. She also tried to eat the kitty litter, which made litter training a challenge and pulled the nipples right out of the baby bottles when we tried to feed her.

Her nicknames were Kitty Bad, Wild Thing and Charyb. She loved playing fetch with this little soccer bean bag we have and she adored her pink mousie (we buried her with her pink mousie in The Butterfly Garden).

She loved being outside in the Butterfly Garden and she always came when called meowing loudly the whole time to let us know she was COMING!!!!!! I called her my Gossip Girl as she was very chatty and sounded as if she was telling you about her day. When she was in the house she followed me from room to room just waiting for me to sit down so she could have some lap time. Most often nestled in the crook of my arm like a baby, My Baby. How do I say goodbye to her?

We are so sad to hear about Charybdis! How can you have a Scylla without Charybdis? It's not right and it's way too soon!

We really enjoyed reading her posts and her great relationship with everyone and the fun party last summer.

We wondered at the new star in the sky south of us. Now we know... We are sending much much love and hugs. We will be thinking of you this season!

There are various places within which a cat may be buried. We are thinking now of a tabby cat, a striped cat, whose coat was like watered silk, and who, so far as we are aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought. This cat is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper season the cherry strews petals on the green lawn of his grave. Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub of the garden, is an excellent place to bury a good cat. For beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or chased bees, or lifted head to challenge some winged intruder. These are good places, in life or in death. My dear sweet friend Charydbis I shall miss you a lot. Your time here with us was way too short but you filled many fun things into each day that you had here.
